Shakira Gibson, MSW, ASW

I am an Associate Social Worker (ASW), which means I am currently in the process of becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), and I am currently being supervised by Michelle Riley, MSW, LCSW.  I have been passionate about social work since I was a teenager.

Educational Background

After serving four years in the Marine Corps I started my academic journey at Modesto Junior College in 2015. I obtained my BA in Sociology from California State University, Stanislaus in 2019. I then graduated with distinction from the same university in May 2022 with a Masters of Social Work.

Work Experience

Throughout college, I gained experience as a volunteer peer counselor. In this role, I provided individual counseling to survivors of interpersonal violence (IPV). During my two internships in the Masters program I worked within local non-profit organizations serving refugee women and survivors of IPV. I was also involved in program development within these organizations as an effort to make mental health services accessible for all.

Professional Development

I am currently focusing my career on providing mental health treatment in the Central Valley. I specialize in providing mental health treatment for trauma and stress disorders. I use evidence based interventions such as Narrative Exposure Therapy. I recently became trained in Eye Rapid Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and I am excited to use it in my practice. My academic and work history has given me the skills to work with people from different backgrounds and cultures. I am dedicated to providing services to clients from all walks of life including BIPOC, veterans, survivors of interpersonal violence, and members of the LGBTQIA community.
